Q a& MiChael t ford. Lighting Designer for Louisville Ballet Michael T. Ford grew up at Bellarmine, where his father, John H. Ford, was a longtime member (and chairman) of the Philosophy Department. When Michael was about 15, his father accepted the presidency of Mount St. Agnes College and the family moved to Baltimore. There, Dale Fern, director of the school’s Theatre Depart- ment, who had studied with the legendary choreographer Martha Graham, encouraged the young man’s interest in lighting by having him run the light board for Chekov’s Three Sisters. When the family moved back to Louisville, Michael attended Bellarmine, graduating in 1975 with a degree in Communication Arts. In his junior year, he started working with Louisville Children’s Theatre, a connection that eventually led to a job at the Louisville Ballet. His first production there was The Nutcracker in 1974. Since 1978, he has been the company’s lighting designer and production stage manager. He agreed to enlighten Bellarmine Magazine about his craft. 22 BellarMine Magazine
