In this Noyce Track-1 project, we are collaborating with the STEM Academies of Louisville to establish a recruitment pipeline for future Bellarmine Noyce Scholars Program. Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) District operates 15 Academies. The STEM Academies of Louisville was launched in fall 2017 with a mission to evolve public high school education by equipping students with the skills needed in the 21st century to thrive in an ever-changing global economy. These JCPS Academies prepare, inspire, and empower students with relevant learning experiences for their success. The JCPS Education Academies offer more than 160+ Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that is modeled to align with the education and workforce development needs to better prepare students for postsecondary and career success. Students enrolled in the STEM Academies develop the essential skills they need to succeed throughout college, careers, and life. JCPS’s STEM Academies model is based on the framework of Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL), to create a sustainable long-term plan for evolving education, with better academic achievement, improved preparation for college, careers, and an increased number of students graduating from high school with college credits. In that regard, JCPS’s STEM Academies offers a new kind of educational experience-one that shifts from traditional techniques and learning environments, to provide meaningful, relevant learning experiences that directly relates to our world today. Beyond graduating ready to compete in an ever-changing 21st-century economy, JCPS Academy students develop the essential skills they need to succeed throughout college, careers, and life.
One of the goals of the STEM Academies is to create a seamless pathway from the secondary to postsecondary level for JCPS students interested in STEM education that would benefit not only the current JCPS students but also the future students of JCPS as some of the these JCPS graduates may choose to become STEM teachers. The STEM Academies also help groups of high school students to connect with business and community partners to better prepare for career success. The STEM Academies also provide: Industry and college field trips, Job shadowing experience, Junior-and Senior-Year summer jobs through SummerWorks, Apprenticeship, or Co-op, and the ability to earn college credits and an industry credential.
