What does the Communication program entail?

The Bellarmine Communication program focuses on the study of interpersonal, intercultural, group, and mediated communication, while giving students hands-on experience with an array of media technologies. Students will study how ideas spread, how brands grow, and how communities connect.

Communication majors can choose to focus their studies in Graphic and Digital Design; Sports Broadcasting and Television/Radio Production; Journalism and New Media Writing; or Advertising, Public Relations, and Marketing.

The Student Perspective

Sophie Snyder is a senior majoring in Communication with a minor in Film Studies. She is considering pursuing a career as a documentary filmmaker and is currently making a documentary on John and Jacqueline Kennedy’s political partnership for her Honors thesis.

Here’s what Snyder had to say about her experience in Bellarmine’s Communication program.

Q: What made you want to study Communication?

SS: It can apply to any sort of career you're interested in. It's helpful for anyone, and I've always been interested in history and government, and I feel like it can come in handy with those areas, too.

Q: What about Bellarmine’s Communication program has stood out to you?

SS: The teachers have been really, really great. I really enjoyed having Dr. Barnett, especially. Their enthusiasm for what they teach is infectious. [With small classes], you definitely have more communication with the professors. You get more feedback from them. It's easier to ask questions. And with your classmates, too. In my Intercultural Communications class, there are a lot of students from different countries, and since it's such a small class you can really get to know them and hear their experiences.

Q: How would you describe the learning environment at Bellarmine as a whole and how does that influence your studies in Communication?

SS: It broadens your perspective. There's a big focus on liberal arts and creativity and being a well-rounded student. You learn about all different perspectives and different parts of the subject you're interested in, and you get a more rounded education.

The teachers are always very willing to meet with you. I've interviewed teachers for various things, and they're very available if they have office hours, so it's easy to meet with them.

Q: What about the relationships you build with your fellow students?

SS: Since it's a small school, I think it's nice to get to know people in your major and talk about Communications-related things and film and similar interests. We work a lot together and share our perspectives.

Q: What would you say to a prospective student interested in studying Communication at Bellarmine?

SS: I would say it's a great program here. The teachers are really wonderful. It can really help you in all aspects of life and with any career. You don't have to be totally set on what you’re going to do, Communication can help with anything.

Q: Do you feel like your experience in this program has helped you find a passion or calling for life after college?

SS: Yeah, I think so. There are different types of communication, so whether it's documentary making or being involved in a campaign for a politician, there's a lot of different communication-related career paths I might want to take.
