How Connections Changed Will's Outlook

Student Stories

By: Will Baxter, Secondary Education - Mathematics

By the end of my senior year of high school, I had narrowed my college options down to two schools: Bellarmine and the University of Louisville. I visited both schools, and my college decision became a no-brainer after my visits. U of L was too large of a university for me. I concluded it would be too hard to make friends and get one-on-one time with professors. I graduated from a very small high school, so I was used to getting to know my classmates and teachers. My visit to Bellarmine was amazing. My tour guides were very hospitable and asked questions about me and the other prospective students on the tour. The tour at U of L, on the other hand, was more generalized than personalized. Despite the large amount of scholarship money offered and the fact that two of my family members attended Bellarmine, this was the main reason why I chose to attend BU. I knew I would get to know the professors well and make many friends. I believe easy access to help during college is a key to success.

Coming into Bellarmine, I had narrowed in on a few prospective careers, but they weren’t related to each other. I was thinking about becoming a priest, a police officer, or a teacher. I reflected on my interests and beliefs more and decided teaching was the career for me. I have always enjoyed getting fun activities together for people and teaching others how to do things. I have also always enjoyed math, so I decided that I needed to be a math teacher. The courses I have taken during my first semester of college and the professors that teach them have helped me lock on to this career.

My first-year focus course (BU 100) was the first class where I connected to my classmates. I really came to know many of them and was invited to attend a religious service on campus with a couple of them. These connections encouraged me to get to know my classmates in some of my other classes. The small class sizes at Bellarmine have made these connections possible. I know I have many more connections to make during the rest of my college career.

My experience at Bellarmine so far has exceeded my expectations. Knowing that college requires a lot of responsibility, I didn’t expect the professors to be as supportive as my teachers in high school, but they are! They have been so willing to work with academics and my personal life. It has been easier to connect to my classmates than I had originally thought. Also, I didn’t expect there to be so many opportunities to get involved. There are many clubs and other extracurricular activities at Bellarmine that match the individual interests of each student.

Bellarmine is truly a place where students can grow and work toward their dream careers. The small community is a major reason why this success is possible. No one is ignored or rejected assistance. The professors care deeply about the success of their students.

Many connections can be made here at Bellarmine. For an affordable price, you can’t beat that!
