Lory is originally from Lebanon, Kentucky, and her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Louisville. Her interests include student-centered advising
models, equity and social justice, and legal issues in higher education.
Best advice for all first-year students at Bellarmine University?
Bellarmine University is an excellent school. It has small class sizes, but major opportunities for you to be involved and get connected! We have an excellent basketball team, several clubs and organizations that you can participate in as well as a beautiful
campus! You will have a fulfilling learning experience and the chance to create lasting friendships and connections.
What are your top 5 tips to get the most from your courses?
- Go to class! It’s a simple yet effective step to learning at the collegiate level. Engagement in your own learning is key.
- Ask and answer questions. Remember you have a voice!
- Take notes, highlight and annotate.
- Be present.
- Make friends who are in your courses and form study groups, create flashcards and use resources such as tutoring to be successful.
How should students work to develop relations with a faculty member?
As a student you should feel comfortable asking your professor questions. Besides asking questions in class, you can visit them in their office hours. Another great way to connect with faculty is through research and internship opportunities. Using faculty
office hours is a major key for student success and building that relationship. Remember they are here to help you.
Who are the most important non-professor's faculty students should get to know as they set out on their college journey?
Academic advisors are also important faculty members in a student’s career. Academic Advisors are here to support your educational journey, build a relationship with you and help you establish a sense of belonging.
What is the best way for students to discover organizations or activities outside of their studies?
We have tools at Bellarmine, such as Engage, which students can use to search for things you enjoy. You can always contact the Student Activities Center to find out more. Research, internship and study abroad opportunities are also available.
What advice do you give students on discovering their major?
Think about what impact you want to make. What problems do you want to solve? What drives you? What are the things you enjoy? When you discover or realize your passion in life, then that can be the best way to know you have found the right major. Also,
use resources available such as your academic and career advisors who will guide you through the process, as well.
How can students get help if they are stressed/depressed/overwhelmed?
Using the Counseling Center when you are overwhelmed or going through challenging times can be beneficial. You may be experiencing homesickness, feeling sad or just need someone to talk to about life. The caring and compassionate professionals at the
Counseling Center are wonderful resources.
What advice would you give to students who are now starting the application process?
Your admissions counselor is key! Reach out to them and they can help you through the process.

Show interest and engage with faculty. Be actively present both inside and outside of the classroom. Share your passions and inquire about their research and experiences. There are several opportunities throughout the semester to attend and participate
in forums, presentations, and workshops hosted by faculty.
Who are the most important non-professor's faculty students should get to know as they set out on their college journey?
Student affairs professionals including academic advisors, career advisors, and leadership within support areas are key to student success outside the classroom. These staff are champions for our students. They are supportive, positive mentors that value
student engagement and well-being.
What is the best way for students to discover organizations or activities outside of their studies?
Our Student Activities Center offers over 90 clubs and organizations to be involved in. Most students participate in at least one. SGA, alternative spring break, leadership groups, social justice and community engagement are some options.
Learning communities and specialty programs help students get connected and make friends, receive support from faculty and staff and get involved at Bellarmine and beyond. The Office of Identity and Inclusion, and numerous other student groups, engage
the Bellarmine community in identity exploration and social justice. For a small, liberal arts university, Bellarmine is big on opportunities to get involved, find your fit and become your best self.
What advice do you give students on discovering their major?
Choosing a major means thinking about and discovering your values, interests, personality and skills. Through meaningful connections, you’ll develop a network of dedicated faculty and career and academic advisors who will influence your experience
at Bellarmine and make sure you stay on track.
How can students get help if they are stressed/depressed/overwhelmed?
Have open and honest communication with a trusted source such as a student leader or professional staff. They will encourage you and provide resources available. They will also refer you to our Counseling Center, who offers free and confidential short-term
personal counseling, group counseling, and consultation to any currently enrolled Bellarmine student.
What advice would you give to students who are now starting the application process?
Reach out to your admission counselor. You can schedule time to chat with them via phone call, text, email or video call. They are a resource for you and can help you find the answers to any questions you have!
