Student Spotlight: Carlos Vega’s Journey from Duolingo Intern to Campus Ambassador

Student Success

88% of Bellarmine Students Complete Experiential Learning, Leading to Career Wins

At Bellarmine, we believe that experiential learning is essential for students' professional development and career readiness. In addition to clinicals, student teaching, research with faculty, and community engagement, we support students in securing internships. These opportunities provide hands-on experience in various industries, allow students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, build professional networks, and gain mentorship from industry leaders. Research shows that students who complete internships are more likely to find employment after graduation. “With 88% of our class of 2023 completing at least 90 hours of experiential learning, it’s no surprise that 99% of them were working or continuing education within six months of graduation,” said Jackie McNatt, Director of Career Development.

Over the summer, Carlos Vega, a double major in Design, Arts, and Technology, interned at Duolingo, the world's #1 language learning app. Recently, he was chosen as a Duolingo Intern Ambassador at Bellarmine, where he shares his passion for language learning with fellow students. He discussed his summer internship and his new position below.

Could you tell us about your summer internship experience? What were your primary duties and responsibilities in the internship?

My summer internship at Duolingo was a wonderful experience. My primary duties involved collaborating on a project related to the Duolingo app and Artificial Intelligence. I learned a lot about user experience, interface, research, and the language learning process.

What was your favorite part of the summer internship?

My favorite part of the internship was attending Duoversity, which was the company's 12th anniversary. Duolingo has offices around the globe, and I met people from other offices and participated in many fun activities. Fun fact: I was able to meet Linda Simensky; she was part of the development of shows such as Dexter's LaboratoryThe Powerpuff GirlsCourage the Cowardly DogSamurai Jack and Ed, Edd and Eddy. She gave interns a fantastic presentation and talked to us about animation.

Can you talk about your new internship as Duolingo Intern Ambassador at Bellarmine? What are your duties and responsibilities?

As a Duolingo Intern Ambassador at Bellarmine, my responsibilities include promoting Duolingo's language learning platform to students and the internships offered annually to Tech students. Students interested should be on the lookout for an event hosted by me and the Design, Arts, and Technology student organization next semester.

Whom do you see as your mentors at Bellarmine? How did these people support and help you learn and grow?

My mentors at Bellarmine have been instrumental in my growth and development. Dr. Apostel, Professor Hartford, Miller, Kopp, and Tyler have provided guidance, support, and valuable insights that have helped me personally and professionally.

What advice would you give students considering an internship?

My advice to students considering an internship to be proactive, take initiative, and network with as many people as possible. Internships are a great way to gain practical experience and build your professional network.

What advice would you give potential students looking to join Bellarmine?

For potential students looking to join Bellarmine, I would emphasize the university's amazing programs and opportunities. As a student, your initiatives are valued and supported. Next month, I will be attending the Adobe Max international conference in Miami with other students, which is a student-led initiative with the support of Bellarmine and the Student government. That is just one example of the many opportunities at Bellarmine. This is a place where you can thrive and reach your full potential.
