Sustainability

A year of growth and progress

Environmental

Greetings from the Sustainability Desk!

As the 2023-24 academic year ends, the Sustainability Committee is reflecting on a year of growth and progress. Amid the hustle of final exams and the anticipation of summer break, we're thrilled to share the highlights of our journey and look ahead to the exciting opportunities that await us.

Over the past year, we've been busy spearheading various initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability across Bellarmine University. From launching and reviewing our sustainability survey to making strides towards achieving our AASHE STARS accreditation, our commitment to sustainability has remained steadfast. Additionally, we've been engaged in discussions to enhance the visibility of our work and expand our messaging on waste-management processes. Notably, the launch of our SharePoint platform has provided a centralized hub for collaboration and information-sharing within our community.

Beyond our committee's efforts, the campus at large has been busy with sustainability initiatives. We're proud to reiterate that Bellarmine has been recognized as a Tree Campus USA for the 10th consecutive year. This designation underscores our commitment to maintaining and enhancing campus forestry, as evidenced by our adherence to the five core standards of sustainability. From establishing a tree advisory committee to sponsoring student service-learning projects, our dedication to preserving our campus environment is unwavering.

Looking ahead to the next academic year, we're excited to embark on new endeavors and build upon our past successes. Our goals include creating greater awareness of Bellarmine's current sustainability initiatives, fostering community engagement in effective recycling and waste-management practices, and pursuing grants to support conservation efforts near Our Lady of the Woods Chapel. Additionally, we're eager to apply for AASHE STARS recognition, which will further validate our commitment to sustainability on a national level.

As we prepare for the year ahead, we invite you to join us in our mission to make sustainability an integral part of the Bellarmine experience. Whether you're a student, faculty member or staff member, there are countless ways to get involved and contribute to our collective efforts. Together, we can create a greener, more sustainable future for our university and beyond.
