Bellarmine contributes more than 80,000 in community service hours

April 27, 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 28, 2008)—Bellarmine University students, faculty and staff volunteered 83,636 hours during the past year (April 1, 2007-March 31, 2008). Activities ranged from cleaning Beargrass Creek to coaching youth sports to volunteering in third world countries.

Bellarmine’s service equates to more than $1.5 million in contributed human resources. According to the Independent Sector--a leadership forum for charities, foundations and corporate giving programs--each volunteer hour is the equivalent of $18.77 in hourly pay, bringing Bellarmine’s volunteer total to $1,569.847.72 in contributed time.

“We are certainly proud of the contributions Bellarmine makes to the community—both in terms of the outstanding education we provide and in the day to day human contributions,” said Bellarmine President Joseph J. McGowan. “The calculation of our service hours proves that our students, faculty and staff live out that part of our mission statement that says Bellarmine will ‘benefit the public interest, to help create the future, and to improve the human condition.’”
