LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 30, 2009) – Bellarmine University Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Doris Tegart announced this week that Sociology professor Matisa Wilbon will serve as the new Director of the Brown Scholars Leadership Program. The Brown Scholars Program was created more than a decade ago with a grant from the J. Graham Brown Foundation. The mission of the program has been to nurture and cultivate leadership, civic engagement and communication skills of young men and women, developing talent that will enrich the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
"Dr. Wilbon is committed to student leadership and service – two critical components of the program," said Tegart. "We welcome her to this new position and thank Dr. Gail Henson for her stewardship of the program for the past several years."
The program offers a four-year sequence of Brown Scholars classes, as well as required colloquia through which the scholars can hear local, regional and even national speakers on topics related to service, civic participation and leadership. All Brown Scholars complete approximately 10 hours of service each year, and the seniors’ capstone projects focus on one of these initiatives.
