Bellarmine Theatre Program to Perform ‘Hedda Gabler’

February 9, 2011

Bellarmine University’s theatre program will perform “Hedda Gabler” beginning February 19, in the Wyatt Center for the Arts’ Blackbox Theater.

Henrik Ibsen creates one of the most vicious female characters in his play, “Hedda Gabler.” Bellarmine's student actors will perform their rendition of the 19th century tale of a newlywed who struggles with a life she finds unexciting and lacking charm. When she hears that her former flame has a new love in his life, she sets out to destroy him.

“Hedda Gabler” is directed by Laura Early, an acting instructor at Bellarmine. Two students, Gabrielle Fuller and Victoria Reibel, will play the lead role of Hedda on alternating nights.

“Hedda Gabler is a complex drama, one scholars have debated since its first production," said Carlos Chavarria, director of Bellarmine's theatre program. "Depending on your own interpretation, the main character, Hedda, can be a villain, a heroine, a victim, or a feminist. Such different interpretations make for a good night at the theatre.”

The performances take place on February 18,19, 25, 26 and 27. All performances begin at 8 p.m., except the one on Saturday, February 19, which begins at 2 p.m. Admission is $10, or $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the door or by reservation via e-mail. “Hedda Gabler” is appropriate for audiences age 18 and over.

The play’s student actors include: Fuller, Reibel, Paul Minton, Mark Rascati, Lex Mitchell, Emily Benson and Syndey Miller.
