Lawyers from Kentucky marriage equality cases to speak at Bellarmine on Thursday, April 9

April 8, 2015

Bellarmine University’s pre-law program is hosting an open session with Louisville attorneys Shannon Fauver, Dawn Elliott and Joe Dunman, who are involved in Kentucky’s same-sex marriage lawsuit that will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court later this month.

The free public event, which includes a question and answer session, takes place on Thursday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Hilary’s, on the middle level of Horrigan Hall. [campus map]

Fauver, Elliott and Dunman are part of the legal team representing eight Kentucky clients who believe the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Last year, a federal judge ruled in their favor, although an appeals court later overturned the ruling. Kentucky’s case will be heard alongside similar cases from Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee in the Supreme Court on April 28.

"Some legal scholars are calling the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision on the legality of gay marriage the most significant civil rights case before the Court since Brown v. Board," said Dr. Lee Remington Williams, an assistant professor of political science and co-director of Bellarmine’s pre-law program. "The pre-law program is therefore proud to host three of the attorneys involved in Kentucky’s gay marriage cases, which are part of the group of state cases included in the appeal. Less than 1/2 of 1 percent of all cases filed in the United States will ever be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. This is a rare opportunity for our students and community to hear from three attorneys involved in such an important and historic legal matter."
