This morning,
Bellarmine University's music department released a bluegrass version of "My Old Kentucky Home" in celebration of Kentucky Derby week.
The music video, recorded last month on campus in Loftus Circle, features the Bellarmine Schola, string faculty and friends. It's available on
YouTube,
Facebook and
Twitter.
Dr. S. Timothy Glasscock, chair of the music department, came up with the idea while working on a project with a bluegrass band last winter. It's the Bellarmine Schola's second annual Derby week performance of the song. Last year, they
recorded it - minus the string band - in Centro's McGowan Hall.
“The Bellarmine Music Department is a progressive organization," said Glasscock. "We don’t define music study like the old-line music schools of the past. Our students are diverse, tech-savvy and 100 percent 'plugged in' to what’s now and what’s next. Our Schola jumped at the chance to make this video and enjoyed every minute!”
Glasscock said two string musicians seen in the video -- Jane Halliday and Sonny Stephens -- are Bellarmine faculty members. They invited their friends Anna Blanton and Chris Fargen to join them for the performance.
