"I said I’d never farm again, and here I am," Dr. Elaine Lonnemann told the News and Tribune.
In addition to her work teaching in Bellarmine's
Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Lonnemann and her husband, Paul, raise a herd of 27 Nigerian Dwarf goats on a five-acre farm in Starlight, Ind., nearly 25 miles from Bellarmine's campus. The farm is on land that her family has owned for 150 years.
The
News and Tribune profiled Lonnemann as part of their Thank a Farmer series that highlights Southern Indiana farmers.
"Our family heritage has always been one that’s maintained the importance of taking care of the land and giving back what you’ve received," she told the newspaper. "This has given me an opportunity to do that with the animals and teaching my children."
"I know from a physical therapist perspective that staying active keeps you healthy, and I’ve had plenty of exercise," Lonnemann said about the time she commits to working on the farm each week.

Bellarmine Magazine visited Lonnemann's farm in 2014, when her herd consisted of alpacas, rather than goats.
