Choosing to pursue a degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, and computer engineering is just the beginning. Currently, there is a critical shortage of technically trained workforce in these STEM fields in the US. Kentucky’s Council for Postsecondary Education (CPE) plans to double the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in these STEM disciplines within 10 years. Job opportunities for STEM professionals remain strong and are predicted to grow faster than any
other career field during the next decade. Employees in STEM disciplines lead in innovation and competitiveness by generating new ideas, new companies and new industries. In the US, over the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs has been three times faster than the job growth in other fields.
According to the reports, there are about 7.6 million STEM workers in the United States, representing about 1 in 18 workers.
In the next ten years, STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17.0%, compared to 9.8% growth for non-STEM occupations. STEM workers command higher wages, earning 26% more than non-technical jobs. More than two-thirds of STEM workers have at least a college degree, compared to less than one-third of non-STEM workers.
