Bellarmine University awarded 274 undergraduate and graduate degrees at its annual December commencement exercises on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Honorary degrees were awarded to founder of USA Harvest Stan Curtis and philanthropist Joan Cralle Day. Curtis also delivered the commencement address.

Bellarmine University’s W. Fielding Rubel School of Business is pleased to announce two significant accomplishments. The business school has been selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of "Best Business Schools," to be published by the Princeton Review and Random House. Also, Educational Testing Service (ETS) has released the results of its fall 2007 business-school testing, and Bellarmine students scored in the 95th percentile, which is ETS' highest level.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for Bellarmine University’s newest residence hall, “Siena Secondo,” were held on campus today. Bellarmine President Dr. Joseph J. McGowan was joined by Bellarmine students and administrators to take the first shovels full of dirt at the ceremony, which was held between Bonaventure and Newman halls.

Bellarmine University President Dr. Joseph J. McGowan has announced the appointment of Dr. Cindy Meyers Gnadinger as dean of the Annsley Frazier Thornton School of Education.

Sam Daley-Harris, an activist for advocate for organizing educational strategies to generate the will to end world hunger, will be visiting Bellarmine on Tuesday, Nov. 27. He will deliver two different lectures about political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty. The lectures will be at 1:40 p.m. and 7 p.m., both in Frazier Hall. Both are free and open to the public.

Bellarmine University will award more than 282 degrees during its annual December commencement exercises on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. in Knights Hall with entrepreneur and founder of USA Harvest, Stan Curtis, delivering the commencement address.

Bellarmine University ranked above its peer institutions in a recent national survey of student satisfaction. A recent USA Today article, which announced the results of the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), indicates that Bellarmine students rank their school higher than the national average in all 10 of the benchmarks.

Bellarmine University recently appointed seven new members to its Board of Overseers. The new members include: Robert G Bader, Jr., Paula Padgett Evans, Dale Gettelfinger, David B. Holobaugh, R. Thad Keal, Thomas P. O’Brien III and Heather Peet Spurlock.

Bellarmine University Associate Professor of Music Richard Burchard has been named as the Kentucky Music Teachers Association 2008 Commissioned Composer. As such, Burchard will compose a work to be performed at the KMTA state conference.

Bellarmine University is hosting its first alumni art show from Nov. 16 until Dec. 16. It will feature the work of approximately 30 Bellarmine alumni who graduated with a fine arts degree from 1977 to 2007.

Bellarmine University’s Lansing School of Nursing and Health Sciences has announced the creation of a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program. The university will offer two courses from the FNP curriculum during the Spring 2008 semester and will introduce the full curriculum in the Fall 2008 semester.

The Bellarmine University Institute for Media, Culture and Ethics will sponsor a public lecture by retired president of CBS News Andrew Heyward on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Brown Activities Center on campus. Heyward’s lecture is expected to focus on his experiences at CBS News and the state of network news.

This fall and winter, Bellarmine University’s Office of Financial Aid is offering a workshop to help parents and students plan for the cost of a college education. Financial aid experts will discuss how to apply for grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs. They will also preview the 2008-2009 FAFSA, which must be filed to receive financial aid.

Walkers, joggers and cyclists have a new recreational destination, thanks to a new paved multi-use path system that was dedicated on Friday, Oct. 5 by Mayor Jerry Abramson. The path connects Joe Creason Park property with Bellarmine University property to create four possible walking routes, ranging from a half-mile to 1.5 miles.

Bellarmine University “knighted” Stephen A. Williams at the university’s annual Knight of Knights black-tie dinner and dance celebration on Saturday, Oct. 13. The honor has been bestowed upon an individual since 1998 in recognition of outstanding support and service to Bellarmine University.

The National Research Center for College & University Admissions (NRCCUA) ranked Bellarmine University’s admissions Web site as the best in the South and fifth among all 3,087 schools in the nation. The 9th annual Enrollment Power Index® (EPI), a research-based analysis, rates how well the functionality and design of college and university Web sites provide information to potential students to take them from prospect to applicant.

In a rare public sector/private sector collaboration, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), the Kentucky Leadership Academy (KLA), Pike and Graves County Schools Districts have partnered with Bellarmine University to implement a pilot program to deliver a co-designed, co-delivered principal certification program based on the elements of redesign being proposed for all Kentucky principal preparation programs.

The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University will host a two day conference on Oct. 19 and 20 on Thomas Merton’s poetry titled “In the Dark Before Dawn: Thomas Merton, Poet.”

The Bellarmine University Women’s Council will sponsor its 34th Annual Designers’ Show House Sept. 8-23 at Elmwood, located at 260 Leland Court off Chenoweth Lane in St. Matthews. Parking for the Show House will be at the Masonic Home, located at 3701 Frankfort Avenue.

The Bellarmine University Institute for Media, Culture and Ethics will sponsor, “Freedom Sings™,” a live multimedia performance celebrating freedom of expression in America, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19. “Freedom Sings” will be presented in Frazier Hall, and it is free and open to the public.
